Responsible travel

Travel lighter on the places you love

No journey is impact-free. These choices make it smaller and the benefits larger.

Move differently

Where a good train or coach exists, it usually emits much less carbon per passenger than a short flight. For long journeys, fewer, longer trips beat many short ones. Direct flights are generally better than connections, and economy seats carry a smaller share of a plane’s emissions than premium cabins.

Choose energy-aware stays

Some lodges generate power from solar, hydro or other renewable sources, treat waste and source food locally. Ask how a property is powered and whether it publishes its practices. Be wary of vague claims; look for specifics, third-party certification where it exists, and honest answers about what is not yet solved.

Respect people and place

  • Learn a few words of the local language and the basics of local etiquette.
  • Ask before photographing people and at sacred places.
  • Spend with local guides, family-run guesthouses and artisans.
  • Follow park rules, keep your distance from wildlife and never touch coral.

Reduce waste

Carry a refill bottle, a cloth bag and a small container. Say no to single-use plastics where tap water or refill points are safe, and take rubbish back to a proper bin.

Give back wisely

Pay conservation and entry fees willingly; they fund protection. If you donate, choose registered local organisations and avoid activities that exploit animals or people.
