Overview

Varkala is unusual for Kerala: a beach town with a natural red laterite cliff, one of the few of its kind on India’s west coast, along which a path runs past cafés, small shops and guesthouses. Below, the sea is powerful, and swimming zones are marked by lifeguards. The nearby Papanasam beach is regarded as a sacred spot where Hindu rituals are performed.

Beyond the beach, Varkala offers yoga classes, ayurveda treatments, the Janardhana Swamy temple, believed to be about two thousand years old, and quiet backwater at Edava and Nadayara. It suits slow, low-budget travel; respect local dress norms off the beach.

Best time to visit

October to March is the dry and comfortable season. The monsoon brings strong surf, closed beaches and heavy rain; many cliff cafés shut for a few months.

Getting there and around

Varkala has a railway station on the main line from Thiruvananthapuram, about an hour away; Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) is the nearest airport at roughly 50 km.

Sample three-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Cliff walk. Arrive, walk the cliff path at sunset and eat fresh seafood at a seaside café.
  2. Day 2 — Sacred beach and temple. Visit Papanasam beach at dawn, then the Janardhana Swamy temple area; spend the afternoon at a yoga or ayurveda session.
  3. Day 3 — Backwater day. Take a boat on the Edava or Nadayara backwaters, then return for sunset.
