Overview
Cairns is the main departure point for Great Barrier Reef tours, with boats heading to outer reef pontoons and islands. The surrounding region also includes the Daintree Rainforest, Atherton Tablelands waterfalls and Port Douglas. Reef trips offer snorkelling, diving and glass-bottom boats, with marine biologists on some operators.
Choose a reef operator that is accredited, small-group and committed to reef protection. Marine stingers appear in warmer months, so protective suits are advised. See the Great Barrier Reef wonder profile for detailed reef context.
Best time to visit
May to October is drier and cooler with calmer seas and no stingers on most days; November to April is hot, humid and wet, with cyclone season.
Getting there and around
Fly to Cairns (CNS), with domestic and some international flights; tours depart from the marina. Port Douglas is about 1 hour north by road.
