Overview
Alappuzha sits between the Arabian Sea and the Vembanad lake system, and the water shapes everything: rice grown below sea level in the Kuttanad region, villages reached by canal, and the kettuvallam, the converted rice-barge that now serves as a houseboat. Mornings begin with kingfishers and cooking smoke along the banks; afternoons are for slow drifting under coconut palms.
The trip works best slowly. Choose a short cruise rather than a rushed overnight, stay a night in a lakeside homestay, and take a small canoe into narrow canals where the large houseboats cannot go. Many travellers also come in August for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, though dates vary and crowds are heavy.
Best time to visit
Cooler, drier months from October to February are most comfortable. The monsoon (roughly June to September) brings heavy rain and swollen waters; some travellers enjoy the green landscape but cruises can be restricted. Summers are hot and humid.
Getting there and around
Alappuzha has a railway station on the Kochi–Thiruvananthapuram line and is about 1.5–2 hours by road from Kochi (COK), the nearest major airport. Local ferries run by the state water transport department link Alappuzha with Kottayam and nearby villages.
Sample three-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Arrive and walk the canals. Reach Alappuzha, check in near the water, and walk or take a shikara canoe through narrow canals in the late afternoon.
- Day 2 — A day on the water. Join a houseboat or small-boat cruise through Vembanad Lake and the Kuttanad paddy fields, with lunch aboard and a village stop.
- Day 3 — Village and coast. Visit a coir or toddy-tapping demonstration, then spend the afternoon at Alappuzha beach and its old lighthouse before moving on.
A sample, not a booking. Opening hours, transport and seasonal closures change; confirm with official sources.
Indicative budget
Mid-range Mid-range overall. Houseboats range from simple to luxurious, and a shared day cruise or a small canoe costs far less than a private overnight boat. Prices vary by season and boat class; use the official counter or a licensed operator.
