Buy for the trip, not the catalogue

SATRAM does not review products or take commissions, so this page explains what to look for.

Bags

For most trips a 30–45 litre carry-on backpack or a wheeled case with a sturdy handle suffices. Check airline carry-on limits for your route. A lockable zip, a rain cover and a comfortable hip belt matter more than a brand name.

Footwear

Choose shoes you have already walked in. Trail shoes suit most walking holidays; boots with ankle support suit rocky or snowy ground. Pack sandals for beaches, boats and hot days.

Layers

Think base layer, insulating mid layer and waterproof shell. Merino or synthetic fabrics dry faster than cotton in the mountains; light cotton or linen is comfortable in humid heat.

Power and electronics

A universal adapter, a power bank (carry it in your cabin bag), and a short multi-port charger cover most needs. Check voltage on your device chargers.

Cameras

A phone is enough for many trips. If you want more, a small camera with manual controls and a compact tripod help for dawn, dusk and aurora. Bring spare batteries for cold weather.

Safety and health

A small first-aid kit, water purification tablets or a filter for remote trips, a headtorch and copies of documents are inexpensive insurance.
