Overview
The Maldives is a chain of coral atolls with islands just above sea level, surrounded by lagoons and reefs. Most visitors stay on private resort islands, but local inhabited islands now offer guesthouses at lower prices, with cultural norms to respect, such as modest dress and alcohol restrictions outside resorts.
Snorkelling and diving reveal turtles, rays, reef sharks and, at certain atolls, manta rays and whale sharks. Reefs are vulnerable to warming seas, so choose operators who follow reef-friendly practices.
Best time to visit
December to April is the drier, sunnier northeast monsoon season; May to November is wetter and windier but often cheaper, and some atolls have better manta season then.
Getting there and around
International flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé, near Malé. Resorts and islands are reached by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flights; local ferries serve inhabited islands.
Sample three-day itinerary

- Day 2 — Reef day. Snorkel the house reef, take a guided dive or dolphin-watching trip.
- Day 3 — Island culture. Visit a local island for a sandbank picnic or a cultural stop, and enjoy a sunset cruise.
