Overview

Cappadocia’s soft volcanic rock has been carved by wind and water into fairy chimneys, ridges and valleys, and by people into houses, churches and underground cities. The Göreme Open-Air Museum preserves Byzantine rock-cut churches with frescoes, while underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı show how communities sheltered from invaders.

At sunrise, dozens of hot-air balloons rise over the valleys, a famous sight best seen either from a balloon or from a ridge. Walking trails such as Love Valley, Rose Valley and Ihlara Gorge offer a quieter way to explore. Many hotels are in restored cave houses.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn offer mild weather. Summers are hot and dry; winters are cold with snow, which makes the landscape beautiful but can cancel balloon flights, which also depend on wind conditions.

Getting there and around

Fly to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) airports, then travel about 1 hour by shuttle or taxi to Göreme or Ürgüp. Buses connect Ankara and Istanbul with the region.

Sample three-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Valleys on foot. Arrive, check into a cave hotel and walk Rose Valley at sunset.
  2. Day 2 — Dawn and churches. Watch the balloons at sunrise, visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum, and explore Uçhisar castle.
  3. Day 3 — Underground and gorge. Tour an underground city and walk part of Ihlara Gorge before moving on.
