Overview

Ubud is Bali’s cultural heart, with temples, galleries, markets and evening dance performances of the Balinese Hindu tradition. Surrounding villages specialise in woodcarving, painting and silver. Terraced rice fields near Tegalalang and Jatiluwih are shaped by the subak, an ancient cooperative water-management system recognised by UNESCO.

The area is busy, and some viewpoints are crowded and commercial. Visit early, walk the quieter lanes, respect temple etiquette (sarongs, no stepping on offerings) and consider staying in a village rather than central Ubud.

Best time to visit

April to October is drier; the wet season (roughly November to March) brings daily rain but green rice fields and fewer visitors.

Getting there and around

Fly to Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) near Denpasar; Ubud is about 1–2 hours by road depending on traffic. Taxis, ride-hailing and private drivers are common.

Sample three-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Town and market. Walk Ubud’s centre, visit the palace and market, and watch a dance performance in the evening.
  2. Day 2 — Rice terraces. Visit Tegalalang early and walk a quieter terrace trail, then see a craft village.
  3. Day 3 — Temples and water. Visit a water temple such as Tirta Empul (respecting ritual rules), then enjoy a wellness session.
