Overview
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of steep coastline south of Naples with villages such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello clinging to slopes terraced with lemons and vines. The coast road is famous and narrow; in summer, ferries and buses are often easier than driving. The Path of the Gods trail offers high-level walking.
It is expensive and crowded in July and August. May, June and September give warm weather with fewer crowds. Lemon products, seafood and coastal walks are highlights, while Pompeii and Capri are day-trip options.
Best time to visit
Late spring and early autumn are best; high summer is hot and busy; winter has fewer services and some closures.
Getting there and around
Fly to Naples (NAP), then travel by train and bus or ferry via Sorrento or Salerno; seasonal ferries link the coastal towns. Driving requires care on narrow roads with traffic limits at times.
Sample three-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Positano. Arrive, walk Positano’s stair-lanes and swim at the beach.
- Day 2 — Path of the Gods. Walk the high trail to Nocelle (or take a shorter walk), then enjoy a seafood dinner.
- Day 3 — Amalfi and Ravello. Visit Amalfi’s cathedral, then bus to Ravello for gardens and views.
A sample, not a booking. Opening hours, transport and seasonal closures change; confirm with official sources.
